Contemplata aliis Tradere

A meagre contribution to the mission and work of the Order of Preachers: my reflections, thoughts, ideas and the occasional rant on matters mainly theological, philosophical and ecclesiastical, drawn primarily from my reading and experience of life and the world. Striving to be always Catholic, firmly Christian and essentially Dominican, flavoured with dashes of Von Balthasar.

Holy Week Meme

The ever-youthful Amy at R.C. Mommy tagged me with this Holy Week meme which has been making the rounds, so here goes...

1. What do you do with your new blessed palm from Palm Sunday?
I usually fold it into the shape of a cross and keep it in my room or use it as a book mark. With larger palm branches, I use them to decorate my room shrine or place over doorways.

2. What do you do with your old one from last year?
I have never burnt the palms. The one from last year, I left in my room in the Philippines.

3. What do you do during Holy Week in preparation for Good Friday?
This year I will have various duties as sacristan - cleaning silver, preparing altar linen etc. In addition I shall be learning music for Tenebrae and the various other liturgies. On Wednesday, Br Paul and I will go to Norwich for the Chrism Mass. I intend to sing the Passion of St John every day this week to familiarise myself with the music and also as a devotion. Customarily, I also listen to Bach's St Matthew & St John Passions and also the setting by Arvo Part, which I love.

4. How do you commemorate Christ's Passion on Good Friday?
I will be at the 3pm Solemn Liturgy and will sing the part of the Evangelist in the Passion according to St John. We shall be using the Dominican chant setting of the sacred text.

5. When do you colour Easter eggs?
I don't do this any more although I used to do it as a child... I understand there will be an Easter egg hunt in our priory though!

6. When do you buy Easter candy?
I'm not doing that this year, although I expect our Bursar has... Last year I bought chocolate for many of my friends in parish where I lived and worked in the Philippines and did so during Passiontide.

7. What is the first thing you plan to do Easter morning?
Drag myself out of bed... sing Morning Prayer with the community at 9:30am and then attend the 11am Solemn Mass.

I tag...

ii) Antonia;
iii) Fr Philip N. Powell OP, if he's reading!

If I'm reading! Of course I'm reading...

1. What do you do with your new blessed palm from Palm Sunday?

I usually keep it pegged to my wall calendar. Of course, in the last three years I have been moving from Oxford, UK to Houston, TX to Dallas, TX...so, I didn't have a palm to contribute to the Fat Tuesday pile.

2. What do you do with your old one from last year?

I really don't know. Is that bad?

3. What do you do during Holy Week in preparation for Good Friday?

I will be presiding at the Good Friday liturgy at our university parish. No doubt I will be hearing nearly endless lines of confessions in my office before then!

4. How do you commemorate Christ's Passion on Good Friday?

I will don my full Dominican habit and a red stole and preside at the Good Friday liturgy. I have already written the homily and I have my fasting plan ready to go. Don't ask, I won't tell.

5. When do you color Easter eggs?

Unfortunately, I don't do this anymore. I do well to unwrapped my chocolate bunny after the round of Easter morning liturgies.

6. When do you buy Easter candy?

I am the house shopper, so I will probably be buying it this coming Monday...my "day off" from work (yea, right). The brothers will insist that I not buy any Easter candy. I will anyway. And it will all be gone by Sunday.

7. What is the first thing you plan to do Easter morning?

I am presiding at the 9am and the 11am Easter Masses at the university parish. So, I will be up at the crack of dawn revising my homily, fretting over my habit, wondering if I will sweat through the whole liturgy or just the canon, etc.

I can't tell you how much better it makes me feel to know that a priest doesn't know where his palm from last year is. :)

Brother, we get to sleep in until 6:05AM on Easter (Lauds is at 6:40)! Of course, we also have to get up for Night Adoration so it's hardly a luxury! :-)
